Dolbeau masterfully reconstructs the tradition of Ratherius's works and the history of the libraries in which they were preserved, drawing an elegant portrait of his sophisticated intellectual profile. The bishop of Verona emerges as an indefatigable reader, a writer and rewriter of hagiographical texts and, thanks to a newly discovered series of anonymous sermons, as a centoist of the patristic works that he carefully read and assimilated.
