This historical novel, rather dark, takes as its argument the last twenty years of the reign of Louis XV, the most difficult, those when the king who had once been called the beloved is hated by the population. This long decline which turns into slow agony foreshadows that of the French monarchy. Through the extraordinary adventures of a mysterious Genoese and his nephew, a dreamy Lyonnais, the book relates the attack by Damiens against Louis XV in 1757. Louis XV was only slightly injured but this assassination attempt on the king was that the work of an imbalance. The fate reserved for regicide was terrible and revealed great discomfort ... Damiens was put to death under particularly horrible conditions which offended many people. The people of Paris were very struck by it, remembered for a long time the fate reserved for Damiens and reproached him for this unnecessary cruelty. This affair sealed the divorce between the people and royalty.
