Through many examples, especially concerning contemporary French, the author shows how writing can sometimes reflect pronunciation, by dispensing with the usual school rules of spelling. It shows how one can "write" stuttering, lisp, anger, enthusiasm, hesitation but also the tunes of songs, military commands ... or even colds or drunkenness. There are indeed few areas that escape this possibility and speakers / writers do not deprive themselves, to the delight of readers. This particular relationship between the language and its graphic garment is highlighted here in an original way, both by the scientific approach and the illustration, which abounds in tasty examples. By overriding the rules of spelling, it is possible to use the scripture to reflect pronunciation.
